The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is making a grand comeback to Birmingham, Alabama after an eight-year hiatus. From January 31 to February 2, 2025, the iconic 'Greatest Show On Earth' will grace the stage at the BJCC, offering audiences a modernized spectacle that pays homage to its rich history. Gone are the days of elephants and animal acts, replaced by a dazzling array of new acts that push the boundaries of traditional circus entertainment.
'This is a whole new reimagined show,' says Wesley Williams, a Ringling unicycle performer. 'It still has that great circus magic that always has been the attraction of the circus,' he explains. 'It just has been reimagined for audiences of 2025.'The show's revival is a testament to the enduring appeal of the circus, which boasts a legacy older than Coca-Cola, baseball, and even the Kentucky Derby. In its heyday, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus traveled by a mile-long train, carrying not just performers and crew, but also their families. This iconic train, a symbol of the circus's grandeur, has been retired, replaced by modern transportation methods like semi-trucks, buses, and airplanes. The focus now lies on showcasing the world's best performers, pushing the limits of what's possible with acts that are amplified and reimagined for a contemporary audience. Williams, a world record holder for the tallest rideable unicycle at 34.6 feet, teases audience members with thrilling spectacles like three highwire performers walking simultaneously and a flying trapeze that crisscrosses, bringing the action closer than ever before. He and his fellow performers recently visited Children's Hospital of Alabama, spreading the magic of the circus to young patients. The show's return to Birmingham marks a significant moment, offering a chance for new generations to experience the wonder and excitement of the circus, while also celebrating its enduring legacy
