The house is quieter. There are untouched food scraps and play dough pieces on the ground. The kids hands and faces are unlicked. There is too much time in the morning. The floor looks empty and spacious without her. No big furry body to dodge when the baby wakes up overnight. I know that we will all adjust in time and the sadness will be less, but right now I just want to remember.
Remember how she walked backwards across every threshold and how she didn’t learn many tricks. How she’d go on walks with Steven without her leash and the grassy spots she liked to roll in. When she would eat a piece of toast with my grandma in the mornings. Her puppy head in the giant tub of blue whale during college parties. How we almost named her puppy Gaga. When she found that knife outside the big yellow. How she set the precedent of co-sleeping with all my children.
So many big moments and memories formed with her companionship and it’s hard to even imagine that life goes on without her now. Rilo, you were the first thing that was mine. Before I had a house, or owned a car, or earned a degree, or had a family of my own, I had you. You will always be a part of me, our family, and our story. We love you forever little poochie!
