Social housing tenants, like John, will have to pay more to buy their home from a council or housing association under rumoured plans
Angela Rayner is set to drastically overhaul the Right to Buy scheme for tenants who want to purchase council homes to try to protect England’s social housing stock
It has been rumoured that Rayner will cut the discount of a maximum of 70 per cent to about 25 per cent. John said he is “so down” at the moment and feels “devastated” that his chance to own his own home has been taken away. Buyers benefit from a discount on the market price which is determined by the type of property and how long they have lived there.
She is also set to extend the maximum qualifying period from three years of residence to around 10 years, while exempting newly built social housing from the scheme altogether.
