Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator and in A Good Year
After collecting Oscars for Best Picture and Best Actor, Gladiator proved that director Ridley Scott and leading man Russell Crowe were a formidable partnership – and yet, despite this success, the pair's follow-up project was almost the polar opposite of the historical epic in every conceivable way.
A Good Year Was Scott & Crowe's Disappointing Gladiator Follow-Up It Failed Everywhere That Gladiator Succeeded Given that Gladiator succeeded thanks to the epic scope of its story, the impressive spectacle of the Colosseum, and Russell Crowe's grimly commanding performance as Maximus, you could be forgiven for thinking that Scott and Crowe's next movie would try and repeat the formula.
Why A Good Year Was Such A Disappointment There Were Several Flaws With The Project Although it was very different from Gladiator, it wasn't immediately obvious that A Good Year would be such a disaster. Both Crowe and Scott had proven their movie pedigree several times over. Even without Gladiator, their track record would suggest that they'd be more than capable of making the story work.
