RickandMorty is set to enter the world of anime in a new spinoff series that will be coming to both Adult Swim and HBO Max later this year.
In a move that surprised fans of animation, HBO Max announced their popular series Rick and Morty is officially getting an anime adaptation. And even better, the anime is set to air this year.
Though information is sparse at this time, HBO Max's official Twitter account tweeted out an image featuring the titular characters with their new designs for the spinoff. The Tweet also announced that the series would release later this year on both HBO Max and Adult Swim. Beyond this, little is known about the series. Eagle-eyed fans will recognize the Rick and Morty's character designs as being identical to the ones used in the Rick and Morty Vs.

In the years since Rick and Morty premiered, the series has gotten a handful of adaptations, including a spin-off series and a comic book adaptation.
Rick and Morty's Anime Gives Fans Hope After Roiland Controversy This news is especially great for fans who were worried they wouldn't see another season of the iconic series. The show's cocreator and voice of the two main characters, Justin Roiland, was embroiled in controversy in early 2023 and soon after, Adult Swim cut ties with the creator and announced that they would be selecting new voice actors for both Rick and Morty. Roiland was later dropped from other shows he created.
Using the classic sitcom style made popular by other animated series like The Simpsons and making it their own with a sci-fi twist, Rick and Morty was able to bring American adult animation to new heights. With this anime adaptation, the doors have opened for creators from both America and Japan to share ideas and create even better animated TV shows. While fans wait for this anime to air, the original Rick and Morty animated series can be streamed on HBO Max.
