How Harmon and Roiland's relationship crumbled.
This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available. Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon had opened up about how his relationship with fellow series creator Justin Roiland fell apart over the course of their time working on the series.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon detailed how his relationship with Roiland fell apart long before the production of Rick and Morty season 7 began. Harmon said that he began bringing writers from another show he'd created, Community, into season 2, with the goal of him and Roiland becoming the "idea men" for the series. However, Roiland saw Harmon bringing in new writers as a detriment, causing him to become less involved in the creative process as time went on.
If anything, what I wanted was for Justin and I both to be able to be increasingly lazy and not show up for work. That was the dream. We’d be these rich idea men. He could roll around and go, like, ‘What if a genie had a butt instead of a d***?’ And I could be like, ‘Yeah, and plus, we’re going to make people cry about it, and that’s going to make them freak out. It’s a story about a genie butt d***, but then we’d win an Emmy, and it’d be more ironic than ever.
I always felt like Justin wanted everybody to make him feel more comfortable, and I was just like, ‘Everybody wants to make you comfortable, communicate, tell us how to do that.' I was freaking out about the whole thing because I wanted the partnership to function. I wanted him happy because when he’s happy, we have a hit on our hands.
