L.A. mayoral candidate Rick Caruso said his plan is to build 30,000 housing units in Skid Row during his first year in office if he's elected mayor or 'throw him out.'
LOS ANGELES -- Developer Rick Caruso, known for building and managing The Grove, The Americana at Brand, and Palisades Village, said he's grateful for his successes and now wants to give back by serving as mayor of Los Angeles and solving the most critical issue facing the city: homelessness.
Caruso's background isn't in building homeless shelters and permanent supportive housing, but the 63-year-old believes if you incentivize the private industry to do public partnerships with the city, you can clean up a place like Skid Row faster and cheaper than ever before."You have to do temporary housing, which my plan has 30,000 beds within a year," he said."I know I can get that built. I've talked to the manufacturers.
Caruso supports Gov. Gavin Newsom's care court bill where a civil court system would compel treatment for individuals with severe mental health and substance abuse issues. Caruso said up to this point, he's worked on the cause and treatment of homelessness through private philanthropy, which includes funding and volunteering at Skid Row's Para Los Niños for over 20 years.
