Carlisle informed the team's billionaire owner, Mark Cuban, on Thursday that he wouldn't be coming back for another year, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported. The Mavericks fell to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the NBA playoffs on June 6, but CubanDallas hasn't won a playoff series since Carlisle led the team to its only NBA championship in 2011, and tensions had reportedly risen between Carlisle and star point guard Luka Doncic.
Carlisle was the third longest-tenured coach in the NBA after the Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra and Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs."Dallas will always be home, but I am excited about the next chapter of my coaching career," Carlisle told ESPN.
