Nothing comes close to Rick and Morty.
Despite being 9 seasons deep, Rick and Morty continues to deliver some of the most creative and entertaining adult animation on TV. Since 2013, the disruptive and chaotic meta brainchild of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland has gained incredible notoriety for its unique flair, spectacular storytelling, and the ambition to make a raunchy, rude, and rebellious animated series for adults.
In a space that has been dominated for decades by shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park, it seemed unlikely for anything else to be able to win over a significant portion of these fanbases, and yet, Rick and Morty created something that stood out and has since proven that not only can it compete, but it manages to outshine the competition. With a blend of nostalgic humor, sci-fi exploration, unapologetic experimentation, and a rebellious streak, Rick and Morty forces audiences to view it through a unique lens, and season 9 sees that same magic combination return.
But beyond that, the fact that this is the case despite major shake-ups behind the scenes makes it all the more impressive. The Morty Things Change, The More They Rick The Same Since season 7, co-creator and voice of both Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, has been replaced by two new voice actors. Ian Cardoni as Rick Sanchez, and Harry Belden as Morty Smith.
Largely, the changeover was seamless, and now in season 9, a couple of years into life with these new actors, it feels as though the show never skipped a beat. Season 9 of Rick and Morty features 10 episodes that continue to showcase incredible innovation, ingenuity, and creativity. On top of that, the roles of the Smith family have become increasingly central to the story in Rick and Morty.
Early seasons leaned much more heavily into the relationship between Rick, a genius inventor with alcohol issues who struggles to open up emotionally to his family, and his grandson, Morty, who largely played the role of his idiot sidekick. Meanwhile, season 9 is thoroughly a family affair.
While much of the show plays into a slightly non-linear story format, later seasons have seen these characters evolve into new staples of the series who continue to return and play increasingly prominent roles, especially in a handful of through storylines that appear to create a spine for the rest of the stories to build around. It's a fascinating combination, and despite clear changes in how the show operates, it retains the same humor and distinct style that made it so compelling in the first place.
Rick and Morty Lands Another Stellar Season Season 9 of Rick and Morty features 10 episodes that continue to showcase incredible innovation, ingenuity, and creativity from Dan Harmon and all of the creatives involved in bringing the series to life. The animation is smoother than ever and retains its distinct, simple style while still delivering complex, high-concept, and quirky ideas in every new episode.
It is also important to note that with so much material built up in the catalog and canon of the series, the show has a lot to pull from. Fans of the show who have been watching from the start will find many more jokes and pieces of meta humor that will resonate differently with those jumping on board for the first time. That being said, this is a universally entertaining show, assuming you aren't easily offended.
It's also great to see how much the supporting characters have evolved and how much fun it is to engage with the rest of the Smith family. While the voice actors behind these roles have always been talented individuals, the show is giving them more space than ever to dig into the characters and create something new and engaging.
The only real negative that came out of this season for me was moments where some jokes and pacing felt slightly jarring. This was rare and not present in the majority of the episodes, but sometimes when a joke was left to linger and breathe, it wasn't always strong enough to fill that silence and overcome an awkward sensation.
Rick And Morty Is The Best Adult Animated Show On TV That being said, Rick and Morty is easily the best adult animated series currently on the air. While other classic shows hold a special and unique space in the TV landscape, nothing is nearly as creative or innovative as Rick and Morty.
The show combines common tropes, like the dysfunctional family dynamic, and splices them with science fiction and fantasy, and the result is an endless exhibition of outrageous fun. Rick and Morty breaks the fourth wall and connects with the audience in a way that no other show comes close to, and even in these moments, it doesn't feel cringey, preachy, or condescending.
It feels authentic, self-deprecating in the best way, and like a series of thought experiments that not only entertain but also highlight intriguing moral questions, and even manages to become emotional in spite of the sheer farcical nature of the series. Rick and Morty is easily the best adult animated series currently on the air. There is nothing else on TV or in film that comes close to or is quite like the extraordinary originality of Rick and Morty.
And even when the show plays with popular media and creates parodies, puns, and pastiches, it does so in a way that stands apart from both the source of the humor and the larger landscape of visual stories. As a result, the show continues to surprise and delight with every new season, while also leaving room to be excited for what will come next.
