on New Year’s Day called 911 after the attack, Richland Hills police said at a news conference Wednesday in which they released several new details about the case.Officers found Brenym McDonald’s body in a bedroom around 7:50 a.m. Sunday when they responded to a home on Labadie Drive that the child, his parents and his grandfather were temporarily living in together, according to police.
Philip Dale Hughes, 62, was arrested about a block away by an officer headed toward the home. He faces a capital murder charge and is being held on $2 million bail at the Tarrant County jail. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.Before Sunday, Richland Hills police had never arrested Hughes or known of his involvement in any violent incidents. His “last official contact” with the department was in 2021 when he made complaints dealing with animals and parking, according to McEachran.
Detectives expected to file the case with the Tarrant County district attorney by the end of the week, police Chief Kimberly Sylvester said. She said there is still more work to be done and interviews to be conducted but that the “bulk of the case” will be provided to the prosecutors soon.
