Richards Bay Fire: Wind complicates firefighting efforts

Firefighters battling a blaze in Richards Bay expect a tough day as wind continues to pick up threatening untouch wood stockpiles

Three days on, and the ambers still burn hot at a woodchip mill in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, with the wind also throwing a spanner in the works.The blaze began on midday on Saturday at NCT Forestry Agricultural Co-operative Limited, quickly spread as strong winds carried hot ambers across the mill.

Residents in a nearby suburb across the highway, had a close shave with the fire after hot ambers were blow into the residential area starting a fire. Fortunately emergency services quickly put the fire out before any damage to life and property could occur. Other firefighters from Mondi Fire Services, Bell Equipment, Transnet Fire Services, South32, RBM, Foskor and other private companies have been brought in to assist.In an update on Tuesday morning, firefighters says they are expecting a tougher day as the wind continues to pick up.On touch mountain piles of woodchip came close to catching a light on Monday night, fortunately, they had been doused with fire foam to protect them from burning.
