The truth is that Richard Sharp’s selection as chairman of the BBC has become totemic of a much wider problem, which is how we appoint candidates to major public positions Clearly, the current system is inadequate ✒️ EliotWilson2 via ipaperviews

had whetted our appetites; certainly the Government’s opponents see a rich seam of embarrassment and are desperate to mine it.

In future years it may be that we look back on Sharp’s resignation with puzzlement, as his sins were minor. Adam Heppinstall KC, on behalf of the Commissioner for Public Appointments,: first, Sharp told the prime minister, Boris Johnson, that he was minded to apply for the BBC role before he submitted his application; second, he also told Johnson that he would speak to the Cabinet Secretary about an introduction to someone who wanted to help ease his financial difficulties.

Clearly, the current system is inadequate. It is true Sharp was appointed by open competition, following awith the House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, but he failed to disclose potential conflicts of interest during the interview process, and was trailed in the media as the likely choice.

As a result, it is relatively rare for the committee to reject the Government’s “preferred candidate”. This is not the high-stakes drama of US Senate confirmation hearings, like those of Robert Bork or Clarence Thomas. Select committees carry out much gentler affairs, and the jeopardy is much lower.
