What Richard Pitino will do 'everything in his power' to stop his father from doing.

New Mexico Lobos head coach Richard Pitino speaks in a press conference on the day before Michigan State faces New Mexico in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, March 22, 2025.

-- Rick Pitino earned his 900th career on-court Division 1 win against his son Richard, and will now attempt to make still more history against him. When Richard and Xavier visit Rick and St. John’s Monday night , the elder Pitino will be seeking career on-court win No. 904, which would move him past Roy Williams for third all-time in men’s Division 1 wins behind Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim. “He will do everything humanly possible to stop me,” Rick Pitino said of his son following No. 22 St. John’s 81-72 “We don’t really think it’s him versus me,” the elder Pitino added. “When he gets his NIL up to the rest of us, he’s going to be one of the top Big East teams. He’s a brilliant young coach. Obviously, I love my son and brag on him all the time, but he’s brilliant, a brilliant mind for the game. But we got to match wits, we’ll be ready for him. I gave my players a big curfew tonight, 5 a.m. so they better get in.”On Jan. 24, Pitino secured his 900th career on-court win, leading St. John’s to an 88-83 comeback win against Xavier. Pitino became the fourth Division 1 men’s coach to achieve 900 wins, overcoming a 16-point second-half deficit in the milestone victory. St. John’s enters Monday’s game on a nine-game winning streak, while Xavier is trying to avoid a second straight loss.Adam Zagoria is a Basketball Insider who covers hoops at all levels -- NBA, College and Recruiting.
