Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Miles Teller is reportedly starring in a remake of An Officer and a Gentleman, Richard Gere's Oscar-winning 1980s romantic drama. Gere made a smoldering team with Debra Winger in director Taylor Hackford’s 1982 hit, about a young would-be Naval officer finding romance while enduring the rigors of Aviation Officer Candidate School. Nominated for six Oscars, the film snagged an award for Louis Gossett Jr.

Over forty years after Gere and Winger became one of the most memorable romantic pairs in Hollywood history, Paramount is eyeing a modern-day remake of An Officer and a Gentleman, with Top Gun: Maverick star Teller set for the lead role. Dana Fox wrote the latest script draft . An Officer And A Gentleman Casts Teller In A Familiar Role Close Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-winning Whiplash helped propel Teller to stardom, and now a decade later, he will play a very similar role in Paramount’s planned An Officer and a Gentleman remake. In Whiplash, Teller portrayed a young aspiring jazz musician being tutored by an uncompromising teacher, played by J.K. Simmons.

Though Gere had the lead in the original Officer and a Gentleman, the Oscar nominations went to his co-stars Winger and Gossett Jr., with the latter snagging a trophy. Coincidentally, Teller’s Whiplash co-star Simmons also won an Oscar, and for playing essentially the same role as Gossett. It’s yet to be seen who will play the drill instructor in the remake of An Officer and a Gentleman, but a reunion between Teller and Simmons would be interesting, if a little on-the-nose, as a casting choice.
