Rich countries must pay to save earth
If the majestic skyscraping Finnieston Crane, one of Glasgow’s iconic landmarks, was human, then its ears would easily penetrate the roofs of the UN climate crisis conference and feel the tension inside the venue.
Known as COP26 – the 26th Conference of Parties, under the arm of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – the summit is expected to end on Friday with a clear plan of how everything discussed here and agreed to over the last 25 years will be implemented. While all seemed to be going well around the conference venue, the mood was totally different in many negotiation rooms, where tension has been thick through the week.
Many other issues have put the richer countries on the spot as they have delayed action in fighting the crisis. Other pledges and commitments from previous COP summits were also not implemented.
Mottley said the battle against the climate crisis could be far advanced if funding by the rich countries, some of which are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, had not been delayed. Johnson later described Mottley’s speech as “brilliant” as he and Biden recommitted to financial empowerment of developing countries to help them deal with the impact of the climate crisis.Apart from the daily buzz around the disused crane, which until 30 years ago was used to load locomotives and other heavy consignments on to cargo ships, the serene water flowing on the other side is such a calming sight.
