Dec. 17 will be the Owls' first appearance in a bowl game since 2014.
Kevin M. Cox/ContributorOn Sunday, the Owls accepted an invitation to the Lending Tree Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Dec. 17 to play Southern Miss. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. at Hancock Whitney Stadium. ESPN will televise.
Rice, which lost its final three games, is the only 5-7 team to be playing in a bowl because there were not enough six-win teams to fill the available 82 spots. The Owls were selected because the Owls had the highest Academic Progress Rate score among 5-7 teams. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to take this team to Mobile and play Southern Miss,” Rice coach Mike Bloomgren said in a statement. “When we practiced last week, I could tell how much this game means to our team.
“Our seniors have a chance to represent Rice one more time and earn the right to be called bowl champions and our underclassmen can take another step in the building of this program.” The Owls’ five wins is the most in coach Bloomgren’s five years leading the program. Rice is leaving Conference USA to join the American Athletic Conference in 2023.
