It was an emotional day Saturday as family and friends of Tamir Rice gathered to celebrate the opening of The Rice Butterfly Memorial in Cudell Park, where the 12-year-old was shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer in 2014.
The memorial is represented by a garden at the former location of the gazebo where Tamir, who would have turned 20 on June 25, was playing with a toy gun when approached by two Cleveland officers in a police car.
“You’ve endured the worst pain every family fears,” said U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio to members of the Rice family. “The family envisioned this garden as a sanctuary, a place of peace for the entire community.”“The United States law enforcement has robbed me of my son’s precious life, like they have robbed so many others,” Rice said. “. . . As his mother the pain is so real I will be in pain for the rest of my life.
Tamir’s siblings, Tajai, Tasheonna and Tayvon also addressed the audience as they remembered their brother. As part of the celebration, 19 doves were released into the air by the Rice family members before the family then cut a ribbon, and released butterflies into the garden.
