Victor, N.Y. — Rochester Gas & Electric is using goats to help cut down on weeds and vegetation around its transmission lines .
Rescued goats from Kaizen Ridge Farm in Victor will help clear vegetation by grazing under the lines, according to RG&E, replacing the use of gas-powered machines. RG&E said service interruptions are often due to trees or brush contacting power lines, and the goats will help clear vegetation at remote locations that are difficult for crews to access.
“Overgrown trees and brush lead to power outages, especially during storms,” Erin Perry, RG&E's manager of vegetation management, said in a statement. “When lead utility arborist Matthew Steiner presented this initiative, I knew it was worth pursuing. Using goats to clear vegetation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to ensure customers receive safe and reliable service.
