Rex deputy chairman John Sharp is bemused by the decision of rival regional airline operator Bonza to fly on smaller regional routes.
to fly on routes such as Coffs Harbour to Maroochydore in southern Queensland, and Mildura to Maroochydore.
“Coffs Harbour is in NSW and people have their business and professional connections in Sydney. There is a small market from Coffs Harbour to Brisbane, but I can’t imagine anyone wants to go from Coffs Harbour to Maroochydore.” He argued that the difficulty in obtaining aircraft had prevented Rex from growing too fast and was confident that the two extra planes due to be delivered in the middle of the year would be fully deployed and filled.“I think in the second half of this year, it’ll be a bit harder. I think average ticket prices will come down during the second half, but they’re very high the moment.
“Twenty other regional airlines have gone out of business during that 20-year period, so it’s fair to say that we have been successful there,” Mr Sharp said. He added that the company had been profitable every year up to, and including, the first year of COVID-19, it had provided a secure career for employees and “a quality, reliable, affordable service to customers”.Mr Sharp said: “The significant shareholders hold close to 70 per cent of the shares and don’t trade them.
