Flights between major airports have been cancelled, with the domestic fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft all grounded.
The company confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday night, following mounting speculation after it suspended share trading on the ASX yesterday.
Flights between major airports have been cancelled, with the Rex Group's domestic fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft all grounded.Regional Saab 340 flights are currently unaffected and will continue to operate.Rex customers with existing tickets on cancelled services are being offered a free transfer onto 13 overlapping Virgin Australia routes.
"This is a difficult moment for Australian aviation with Rex entering voluntary administration and announcing the immediate suspension of its 737 jet operations," Hrdlicka said in a statement issued on Tuesday night."The team at Virgin Australia are thinking about everyone at Rex today, an airline with a proud and important role in Australian aviation, particularly for regional Australia.
Investors had been on tenterhooks waiting for a possible announcement relating to a news article published on the weekend. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier told the ABC he and Transport Minister Catherine King had sought more information from the airline."Rex is particularly important for regional communities and there are a range of communities where Rex is the only airline serving some of those destinations," he said.Ernst & Young Australia has been appointed joint and several voluntary administrators by the Rex Group's respective boards of directors.
