The case began on June 2, when a logging crew working in woods found a burned-out car. Butler County Sheriff Danny Bondthat it had been found off Mt. Pisgah Road, west of Starlington and well off to the northwest of I-65 Exit 114, the Georgiana-Starlington exit. Some early reports said the bodies were found in the vehicle’s trunk, but Bond said that was not the case.
Bond said at the time that the fire damage was so severe that quick identification of the vehicle and the bodies was not possible. The Evergreen Police Department was involved in the investigation, he said, because of a possible connection to the case of two men reported missing in that city a day earlier.
The victims were later identified as two men from Evergreen, in neighboring Conecuh County: Devante Ladalvin Section, 28, and Isiah Ryhem Maxwell, 28.
