Exceptional cast bolsters new take on comedy-drama about a tight group of female friends who hang out in a Southern salon.
The luminous Truvy and her in-home beauty parlor is awash in eye-popping pinks; it’s a local gathering spot where great hair is designed for a fee, advice dished out for free. Laughter, tears and discoveries explode as a faulty boombox adds a little sonic texture in the corner, after a slap to the plastic gets the tunes going again.
“Steel Magnolias” kicks off on a big day in town, the impending nuptials for Shelby , whose mother M’Lynn is dealing with a strange explosion at the hands of her husband, who is strangely trying to detonate birds when he should be administering to father-of-the-bride duties. While Andrea Bechert’s scintillating set is full of commanding details, the spacious Mountain View venue itself does the play no favors, which is no fault of the production; intimacy would certainly inform the storytelling in more stirring detail.
The strongest performances belong to Williams and Troupe. Williams’ Shelby carries an irony about her, a martyr who is willing to sacrifice everything for motherhood. But just notice Troupe’s simple, regal response as M’lynn as others celebrate the news of Shelby’s pregnancy. There are no histrionics at play, just a solemn stoicism that will manifest into further devastation later.
