Review: The Smashing Pumpkins arrived at a packed Metro on Tuesday in attack mode.

Smashing Pumpkins perform for a packed house at Metro in Chicago on Sept. 20, 2022.

Perhaps his mood shift partially owed to the pandemic, but the oft-gloomy Corgan looked delighted to be alongside original members James Iha and Chamberlin , as well as later addition Jeff Schroeder . Touring bassist Jack Bates and backup vocalist Katie Cole rounded out the lineup. Aside from some brief joking banter , the Pumpkins kept their hands on the proverbial wheel in exploring where they’d been and where they were headed.

Drawing from a seemingly unlimited palette, the Pumpkins delved into a wide spectrum of music — pop, rock, psychedelia, heavy metal, electronic, goth, noise, baroque — and often, melded otherwise distant strains in songs whose aggressiveness belied their beautiful melodies and delicate details. Not surprisingly, the group ignored material released from between 2007-2014, when Iha and Chamberlin were out of the mix.

The Pumpkins also debuted two new tracks from “Atum.” Though optimism has overshadowed reality on some prior post-breakup projects, both “Empires” — a rough, savage blast that witnessed Corgan hissing words and the band converging like a swarm of bees — and the shifty, marching “Beguiled” held tremendous promise. As did a demented, nightmarish rendition of Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime.”
