Allen’s “The October Storm,” which had its Chicago premiere on the Far North Side Monday night, is the second play in what is intended to be a triptych of new Chicago stories: “The Grand Boulevard Trilogy,” a series of plays about life in Black Chicago in the 20th century with each drama set on a different floor of the same three-flat apartment building.,” set in both 1921 and 1939 and following the fortunes of a young married couple who migrated to the city from Mississippi.
The piece, which is set in 1960 in a basement apartment, focuses on the relationship between 16-year-old Gloria and her grandmother, Mrs. Elkins . Some of the conflicts are quotidian and generational: Gloria craves freedom to spend time with her fawning boyfriend Crutch while her grandmother is a rigorous disciplinarian.
