The spoof of the cabin-in-the-woods genre with an all-Black cast is fresh, funny and...
But when the friends arrive they can find neither Morgan nor Shawn but do find something profoundly disturbing. It's a board game called The Blackening featuring a throwback, minstrel-like character and a disembodied voice that tells them they must play the game -- in which they have to answer questions about Black pop culture and history -- or die.
It's not as if any of this is blindingly original. There are echoes of"Scream,""Scary Movie,""Bodies Bodies Bodies" and last year's"Bitch Ass," which also featured Black characters in a strange house playing games of life and death.
In a summer of so many superheroes, it's nice to be reminded that not all heroes wear capes. Some just play board games.
