The production of Debbie Tucker Green’s play showcases sensitive acting and tension-building.

From left, Kristen Lazarchick, Denise Lee and Shannon J. McGrann star in Second Thought Theatre's production of British playwright Debbie Tucker Green's "hang."What if the victim of a violent crime got to decide the perpetrator’s fate? That’s the premise of British playwright Debbie Tucker Green’s cryptic

The audience never learns the details of the criminal’s heinous act or why his punishment is determined this way. Instead, the play hangs on the evolving relationship between three people essentially trapped in what looks like an ordinary office break room. Though the characters never say their names, the script calls them One, Two and Three.

At the same time, these functionaries are handcuffed by rules about what they’re allowed to say or do as Three ponders her monumental choice. What’s clear is that the criminal justice system has been outsourced to a faceless bureaucracy or at least has become one. The introduction of a letter from the perpetrator of violent crime comes late in "hang," Debbie Tucker Green's play in production at Second Thought Theatre. The victim, portrayed by M. Denise Lee, must decide his fate.At first, Lee speaks barely above a whisper. She’s creating a baseline for the build up of Three’s anger and sorrow.
