In Reinaldo Moya’s Piano Concerto, aural illusions were elusive

are abstract geometric juxtapositions of colors. Moya attempted to translate Cruz-Diez’s techniques into music.

Moya used the melodic technique of hocket — alternating every note in a melody between two or more instruments — as an analog. In a hocket, one can sense two individual melodies plus the third melody formed by the combination of the two. In Cruz-Diez’s “Chromosaturation,” a viewer walks through strong fields of contrasting projected colors, wreaking havoc with their rods and cones. Moya translated this into pedal points, rippling arpeggios and percussion ostinatos, nothing near the disruptive effects of Cruz-Diez’s optical illusions.
