But burgeoning costs of such tours, and increasing challenges of supporting our hometown orchestras, put an end to that.
The program certainly was novel: Chopin’s E minor Piano Concerto in a Krzysztof Dombek/Kevin Kenner arrangement for just piano and strings, and Schubert’s B-flat major Piano Sonata in Heribert Breuer’s arrangement replacing the piano with wind trio and strings.Soloist in the Chopin was Alessio Bax, a major concert artist well known around here for past study — and subsequent teaching — at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts.
Chopin’s orchestral writing has had its share of detractors, but it still was surprising how little the score’s original winds, brass and timpani were missed. These are presumably top-flight New York musicians, and ensemble was always secure. Clarinetist Alan Kay was a particularly eloquent player. But high violin writing was occasionally less than fine tuned, and at least in this acoustic the double bass was often too boomy.
