The Dallas Symphony offered standard works by central European composers at the Meyerson.

But Thursday’s concert at the Meyerson Symphony Center took the safe road.
The orchestra responded admirably to Märkl’s rhythmic freedoms. He lingered at the tops of phrases, or slowed the tempo into pivotal downbeats, before pushing ahead. He also skillfully paced the proceedings, setting tempos that let him keep momentum. The scherzo featured characterful woodwinds and prominent timpani rolls. The finale opened excitedly, before principal clarinetist Gregory Raden shaped his solos with a creamy tone and subtle shadings.
