Production is co-produced by New Village Arts and Oceanside Theatre Co. at the Sunshine Brooks Theater in Oceanside
The first thing to know about recently passed Broadway composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim is that he was a genius. The second is that Sondheim’s scores can be treacherous to perform. Their intricate melodies, blazing-fast lyrics, changeable tempos and multilayered harmonies are devilishly difficult work for singers, musicians and directors to pull off.
James Lapine’s libretto is about famous fairy tale characters who achieve their happily-ever-afters by intermission, only to discover in the musical’s second act that real life is no fantasy. In this production, the cast performs to a pre-recorded score, with music direction by Leigh Anne Sutherlin.
Leading the cast as the Witch, whose spell impacts all of the other characters, is New Village’s new managing director Rae Henderson-Gray, who gives a very funny and gender-fluid twist to the role that’s fun, sassy and entertaining. Luke Monday is sincere and sympathetic as the childless Baker, and Sydney Joyner is warm and intuitive as the smart but unfulfilled Baker’s Wife.
Tanner Vydos is a comic standout as both the dirty-dancing Wolf and the charmingly vapid Cinderella’s Prince. As Little Red Ridinghood, Jasmine January has a sense of childlike wonder and mischief. Kevin Phan does fine double-duty as the dimwitted Jack and a flamboyant Rapunzel’s Prince. Megan Carmitchel is a lovable Cinderella, Lauren Ashley is exasperated as Jack’s Mother and Brittany Adriana Carrillo is both the mentally troubled Rapunzel and Cinderella’s evil Stepmother.
