The GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X drives like a boss
I tip my hat to the designers at GMC for creating one of the best-looking trucks today. Other trucks resemble NFL defensive linemen snarling under their plastic-coated metal bar helmets. But the Sierra 1500, with its C-shaped headlamps, wears a charming smile giving it a handsome appearance further complimented by the optional Volcanic Red exterior color.
Highlight features on AT4 and AT4X packages offered by GMC include a 2 inch lift kit featuring Rancho branded off-road-tuned shocks, automated locking rear differential, red tow hooks and skid plates protecting the truck's vital drivetrain components. It stands tall on 18 inch gloss black wheels wrapped in 33 inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires, giving it total ground clearance of 11 inches. Not to mention GMC's signature Multi-Pro tailgate.
Still, trucks are made for work, so during a road test loaded 1,250 pounds of livestock feed in the back of the Sierra 1500 AT4X’s short box cargo bed. This freight was close to its max payload of 1,320 lbs. The truck easily handled the weight during a 150-mile trip, with its fuel economy dipping slightly from 15-16 mpg average to 13 mpg. Towing capacity for the AT4X-spec is lower from the standard 9,000 lbs to 8,900 lbs.
This variant of the GMC Sierra had the lowest payload/towing rating of its main four competitors. In the end, this $81,000 truck is mostly for show and not for actual work. Like the boss's truck. It doesn't do heavy lifting, it tells others to do it. But, if you're the type that collects aftermarket part catalogs, this off-road package takes the work out of searching for mechanics with trustworthy skills. It provides tires, wheels and the lift kit straight from the factory, so all you have to do is strut down the boulevard, wafting that new truck smell.
