Katerina McCrimmon as burlesque performer Fanny Brice is romanced by Stephen Mark Lukas' gambler and con man Nick Arnstein in the national touring production of "Funny Girl."may not be a household name like her predecessors in the role, but on the latest national tour she’s a star in the making. On opening night of the musical’s Dallas run Wednesday, McCrimmon wowed the audience at the Music Hall at Fair Park with her considerable pipes and acting chops.
While it deals in evergreen themes like the nature of love and the costs of success, the story is a bit dated. You can see the mechanical, episodic plot at work even in this first-rate production.is Fanny, a feisty, funny and enormously talented real-life character whose confidence — and prospects — were undermined because she didn’t look like a traditional star.
The show takes its time setting up her unlikely rise, with McCrimmon convincingly expressing both Fanny’s doubts and resilience. She also revels in the slapstick humor that groundsin its time period. Ziegfeld-style production numbers grow wackier as the musical progresses, peaking with a military scene featuring soldiers in glittery silver uniforms and Fanny sporting a mustache and a vest lined with bagels.
Melissa Manchester plays Fanny Brice's mother in the national tour of "Funny Girl," with the title character portrayed by Katerina McCrimmon.brings a sassy attitude to Fanny’s stereotypical Jewish mother. Izaiah Montaque Harris does a nice job establishing Eddie Ryan as Fanny’s mentor who wishes he could be more to her. Walter Coppage is elegant as the impresario Florenz Ziegfeld.takes off.
Stephen Mark Lukas portrays the gambler and con man Nick Arnstein in the national tour of "Funny Girl."Though Lukas’ voice and acting are a little on the brittle side, perhaps to signal Nick’s uptight, old-fashioned attitudes, their duets on “I Want to Be Seen with You,” “You Are Woman, I Am Man” and “Who Are You Now?” are among the best moments.
