The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra concert drew a large and eager audience with an all-Tchaikovsky program that included pianist Joyce Yang as soloist.

. Only 19 at the time, she was already a charismatic and communicative musician, and the exposure inaugurated a career with major orchestras and chamber ensembles. Between her personal following and a program of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Fifth Symphony, Bass Performance Hall had a large and eager audience.The guest conductor was Edo de Waart, whose long career has included music director appointments with, among others, the San Francisco, Minnesota and Milwaukee symphony orchestras.

Crescendos and decrescendos were seamlessly executed. The third movement waltz was graciousness itself. Climactic moments thrilled without being overcharged. The finale was exhilarating without ever flirting with vulgarity. The orchestra sounded very good, indeed. Special praise to principal horn Gerald Wood for liquescent and lovingly shaped second movement solos, surely the instrument’s most famous in the orchestral repertory.It was annoying to have the orchestra’s pre-concert warmups loudly amplified in the lobby. And while there’s something to be said for the concert introductions by FWSO musicians projected on a big overhead screen, we don’t need to be told, “You will be thrilled,” or, speaking of Tchaikovsky, “You will feel his struggle.
