Review: First look inside Walnut Creek’s swanky new sushi lounge, Sakimoto

Dynamic chef duo with experience at Sasa, Danville’s Kibo and San Francisco’s Namu Gaji breathe life into former Broadway Club spot.

There’s a serious Japanese garden theme going on inside Sakimoto, the new upscale sushi restaurant and bar that opened last week in Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza. Brightly lit, artifical cherry blossoms hang from the ceilings, and wall-sized screens show clips of the iconic, billowy trees, washing the dining room in pinks and purples.

Together with Sakimoto co-owners, which include Rooftop’s Jeff Dudum, they are hoping to create a culinary experience that rivals the Japanese restaurants of cities like Las Vegas or San Francisco. They’ve certainly got the farm-to-table part down: Sous chef Jade Kim, who, like Zawiski, lives in San Francisco, hits the farmer’s market for produce before getting on the Bay Bridge. They source oysters from Hog Island Oyster Co.

The namesake Sakimoto roll is made with crab and tempura green bean wrapped with albacore tuna and finished with jalapeno, microgreens, sweet mayo and sriracha.
