Felder plays numerous challenging piano works and gives a heartbreaking performance as the famed Russian composer
Jonathan Silvestri and Hershey Felder in a scene from Felder’s new play with music “Rachmaninoff and the Tsar” at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego. Sergei Rachmaninoff is remembered for his rich, sweeping and often complex melodies that evoke the sounds and sights of his native Russia.
“Rachmaninoff and the Tsar,” which Felder wrote, designed and stars in, made its world premiere in Santa Monica last month and arrived Tuesday at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego for a five-day run. Felder first wrote about Rachmaninoff and Romanov in a 2021 movie that was filmed in Florence, Italy and streamed online during the pandemic.
This new play adaptation, with dramaturgy by former Old Globe co-artistic director Jerry Patch, delves much deeper into the imagined relationship between the two men. Although Rachmaninoff and Romanov did meet in person at least once, their rocky friendship in Felder’s play is deeper and more combative.
As Rachmaninoff, Felder is austere, aloof and razor-sharp in his fury toward both Russia and Romanov. Felder has a flawless Russian accent and he masterfully plays a wide range of the composer’s repertoire, with both delicate pianissimo and ferocious bravado. Excerpts include the composer’s instantly familiar Preludes in C Sharp minor and G minor; his Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor ; his haunting Vocalise; and his Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini .
