Two recent Latin-American works and 'Scheherazade' certainly showed off the orchestra.

There’s lots of flash and flair to come, and Montero dispatched the piano’s chatters and swoops of sound with the greatest panache. But I couldn’t help thinking the 30-minute concerto could use some editing, that it would make a fabulous 20-minute piece. At least for me, both the slow movement and the finale outstayed their welcome. The finale in particular laid on one motivic module after another without a clear reason for being.
