Southern Methodist University's Caruth Auditorium hosted two chamber music concerts this week.
, Dallas’ modern music ensemble, offered lesser-known works from the 20th and 21st centuries, mainly by American composers.. Part of a cycle inspired by nature, the nine-minute piece is scored for piano, harp and vibraphone.
The music evokes a wintery atmosphere with soft high lines in the piano, harp glissandos and glowing tone clusters from the vibraphone. Sustained resonances mix together, creating appealing colors. Pianist Liudmila Georgievskaya, harpist Emily Levin and percussionist Drew Lang effectively conjured the delicate soundscapes.. The five-minute work calls for three percussionists to play instruments made of different materials, grouped by metal, wood and skin in the score.
The other two pieces on the program came from earlier in the 20th century and drew on folk melodies from different lands. Violinist and Voices’ director Maria Schleuning teamed up with cellist Jolyon Pegis in a rhapsodic reading. Particularly impressive were exquisite soft dynamics and poetic phrasings of melodies.
