Review: Daliland Salvador Dalí’s art is thankfully absent in this biopic about fading fame. | ✍️ Dmitry Samarov

Mary Harron begins her surprisingly affectionate Salvador Dalí biopic with a re-creation of his appearance on the American game show, in which a blindfolded contestant has trouble guessing the famous surrealist’s identity from his blasé answers until somehow blundering into a question about his distinctive mustache. Dalí was one of the first artists better known for what he looked like than what he did. He would have been right at home in the media environment of today.

In the 70s, Dalí and his wife, the imperious Gala, lived so lavishly that his gallerists and handlers turned to selling cheap copies as original lithographs, presigned assembly-line-style in marathon sessions before any image was even printed on the paper, just to pay their hotel bills. In flashbacks, the young and beautiful Gala and Dalí hobnob with artists and poets; it’s a stark contrast to the garish and vampiric bacchanal that consumes their present days and nights.

Ben Kingsley and Barbara Sukowa ham it up as Dalí and Gala, but there is no other way to portray this pair. It is a testament to Harron’s skill that she’s able to make these despicable and delusional monsters sympathetic, and it’s a minor miracle that she does so without showing a single actual Dalí painting. He was a pioneer of fame for its own sake; the less said about his art, the better.
