Don Stephenson , Caden Brauch , and the Company of “Back to the Future: The Musical” perform a production number. When it comes to Broadway musicals, there’s virtually no such thing as a new idea, with many of the shows these days based on previous films, books or plays. Even if the show isn’t especially good, audiences will turn out for a familiar title they’re nostalgic about.

For those not familiar with the movie, teenager Marty McFly in 1985 California is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean car, where he meets a younger version of the car’s inventor, Doc Brown, becomes a matchmaker for his parents and tries to hitch a ride back to the future. If you loved the original movie, you’re likely to enjoy the musical, which re-creates the original story . All of the film’s characters, clothing, hairdos, signature lines, jokes and souped-up DeLorean are in the show. Even the film actors’ vocal intonations and physicality have been re-created to near perfection, particularly by Mike Bendeman as Marty’s awkward dad, George.

The show’s excellent video design brings visual energy and a sense of motion to the show, and the period costumes choreography are outstanding.
