In George Lucas' alternate Revenge of the Sith cut of the Battle of the Heroes, Obi-Wan's guilt would have been deepened.
The tragedy of Obi-Wan Kenobi was laid bare in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, but an alternate cut of the Battle of the Heroes would have actually deepened his guilt. The final duel between Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker is the peak of the prequel trilogy, an emotional rollercoaster in which the two brothers fought to the death.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT This alternate duel was swift and brutal, highlighting Anakin's raw power. It saw Anakin grab Obi-Wan by the throat, disarming him with ease; Obi-Wan used telekinesis to summon his lightsaber, and the blade cut through Anakin's limbs almost by accident as it flew into Obi-Wan's hand. Anakin and Obi-Wan's alternate Mustafar duel would have been very different, and it would have added layers to Obi-Wan's guilt.
Obi-Wan went to Mustafar intending to defeat his former apprentice, shaken after viewing footage of Anakin killing the Younglings - and then shocked to see him attack Padmé. It is one thing to defeat him, though; it is another to do this kind of damage. Obi-Wan would be haunted by the memory of this battle, wishing things had played out just a little differently. He'd have been even more horrified when he learned Anakin had survived, left living in a cold and agonizing suit of darkness.
Obi-Wan's Guilt Explained Why He Didn't Believe Vader Could Be Redeemed The alternate Mustafar duel would have set up the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ TV show far more effectively because it would have added more depth to his guilt. Obi-Wan would be tortured by the realization of what he had done, and his self-imposed exile to Tatooine would have been driven by self-hatred and disgust.
This would also explain why Obi-Wan told Luke his old enemy could not be redeemed. It would have partly been his own sense of guilt, his belief he had done something so horrific it could not be taken back. Those words would be an expression of self-hatred, carrying an even deeper weight. He would be proved wrong, of course; Darth Vader was always redeemable, although not by Obi-Wan or even Ahsoka Tano.
