A popular soda of the past is making a comeback to a refrigerated section near you. On June 10, a spokesperson from the Coca-Cola Company confirmed to TODAY.com that Retro Diet Cherry Coke is officially on its way back to stores.
After at least five years off the market, the vintage cans will be available starting in mid-July for a limited time only, exclusively at the Kroger family of stores . The rumor mill has been buzzing about Diet Cherry Coke for a few days now, after popular snack-spotting social media account Snackolator posted about the possibility of its return on June 6. “I am way too excited for this one,” reads the post, which added that the flavor would return in retro packaging. “It’s been years since the OG Diet Cherry Coke has been out so I’m really looking forward to getting it again.” There was a ton of excitement in the comments section. “there is a god,” wrote one Instagram user. “Need this immediately,” wrote another. “Oh the grocery stocker is gonna hate to see me coming,” added one more. Cherry Coke was first introduced in early 1985 in select U.S. cities at first before going national later that summer. The flavor proved so popular that in 1986, the company added a low-calorie version, Diet Cherry Coke, to its offerings. “It’s a one-calorie cherry taste vacation!” a voiceover says in a 1988 commercial for the drink. Then, in 2007, the company came out with Coca-Cola Zero-Sugar Cherry. It's unclear exactly when Diet Cherry Coke was officially discontinued, but it was some time between 2018 and 2020. Here’s hoping it takes us all on a tasty trip down memory lane.
