KUALA LUMPUR: A Sessions Court here fined a retiree RM2,000, in default one month in jail, for sharing an offensive remark on Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba on social media.
Abdullah Sani admitted to making the offensive remark with an intent to hurt others through his Facebook account under the name “Sani Ahmad” at 11.45pm on March 31.The offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, or up to a year’s jail, or both, if convicted; and a fine of RM1,000 for every day the offence is repeated after conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Annur Atiqah Abd Hadi asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence against the accused. The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a minimum sentence and said he was remorseful for his action.Prior to passing the sentence, judge MM Edwin Paramjothy said the accused must be sensitive when posting on his social media account.
