A beloved former NYPD sergeant died tragically while winter surfing with friends off the coast of Long Island. Authorities believe a heart attack led to drowning.
Jack Shapiro, a 54-year-old retired NYPD sergeant and avid outdoorsman, tragically died on Sunday while winter surfing with friends off the coast of Gilgo Beach, Long Island . His son, Jack Jr., 19, told The Post that his father was a strong swimmer and well-equipped for cold-weather surfing, wearing a full face, head, gloves, and shoes.
Authorities believe Shapiro, who retired from the NYPD in 2013 after serving in the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick, likely suffered a heart attack while in the water, leading to drowning. An autopsy by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office will confirm the official cause of death. Shapiro's ex-wife, Kimberly Corazzini, is making arrangements for his funeral. She described him as a loving father who cherished the outdoors, woodworking, boating, and fishing. Jack Jr. highlighted his father's passion for classic rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blue Oyster Cult, as well as grunge icon Nirvana. Shapiro's family remembers him as a dedicated father, a strong, healthy individual, and a man who deeply loved his hobbies and passions.
