A retired New York City firefighter has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly fatally beating a Long Island man following an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
A retired firefighter from New York City has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a Long Island man following an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. James Rogers, 66, allegedly fatally struck Mark Iacono, 65, with his fists on Thursday evening after the meeting concluded in Bay Shore. Rogers, a former FDNY captain who served 22 years with the department, currently operates two assisted living facilities.
According to Long Island investigators, Rogers and Iacono engaged in a heated argument over an unpaid debt in the parking lot of the United Methodist Church shortly before 9 p.m. Iacono was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead within 10 minutes of arrival. Rogers was subsequently charged with first-degree manslaughter and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip. He is scheduled to return to court on March 11.Rogers' lawyer, Robert A. Macedonio, stated that his client and Iacono had a previous business relationship and characterized the incident as an argument stemming from a business dispute.
