When we cried foul, the manager’s response was, “Do you really think we’re the only manufacturer with this kind of bad behavior?” And he was right.

The new era of mobility, though, should be changing the approach of automaker purchasing strategies. Instead of pitting suppliers against each other for a 4-6 year, 60/40 deal of competing parts, the Purchasing Agents must be considering ways to keep the supplier healthy, improve their quality and win “the long game.” As succinctly stated in IndustryWeek’s “,” an upfront strategy and cultural change is required.

But the very fair question is “What’s the why? Why care about this now?” The answer: mobility. To win the long game in mobility, the CEOs must understand the changing marketplace for product stickiness, switchover costs and product quality.
