The ammunition was sold through a subsidiary of Dick's Sporting Goods at the time and shipped to New Jersey, authorities said.
A settlement between Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Attorney General’s Office was announced Thursday after a subsidiary of the sporting goods chain was accused of illegally selling high capacity magazines online and shipping them to the Garden State, officials said.
The company, which formerly operated the subsidiary Field and Stream, agreed to pay $46,000 in penalties and attorneys fees while agreeing to update and maintain policies that prohibit advertising, selling and shipping high capacity magazines to New Jersey residents, officials said. Dick’s Sporting Goods must also train employees on the new policies and maintain records of any sales of high capacity magazines to New Jersey residents in the future, officials said., possession of high capacity magazines is prohibited in New Jersey under a 2018 law. High capacity magazines hold 10 or more rounds of ammunition and have been frequently used in mass shootings, officials said.
An undercover investigator was able to purchase six high capacity magazines capable of holding at least 12 rounds of ammunition online from Field and Stream on two occasions during the summer of 2022, authorities said.
