As the holiday shopping season reaches its final stretch, consumers should be aware of changes to return policies at some major retailers, which could impact both time and money. Some retailers have shortened return windows, while others are now charging fees for returns by mail. The National Retail Federation reported that over $100 billion was lost to return scams last year, prompting some retailers to tighten their policies.

Target has shortened its holiday return policy by five weeks, now starting November 7. Items purchased between then and Christmas Eve must be returned by January 24. Kohl's has reduced its regular return policy from 180 days to 90 days for customers not using a Kohl's card. Consumers will be responsible for postage if returning items by mail.January 31 for most items shipped Nov. 1 thru Dec.31. Some returns have restocking fees. Most items have at least one free return option. Amazon Haul: 15-day return window only.: January 14 for most purchases made between November 1 – December 31. Loyalty members generally get more time. Some restocking fees may apply. Free returns with their shipping label.: No deadline, but 90 days for: TVs, computers, cameras, smart watches, music players, cell phones, monitors, major appliances, etc. Free returns for Costco.com purchases.: 90-day deadline without Kohl’s card; 120 days with. Premium electronics, watches, Sephora bought after Nov. 1 returnable until Jan. 31. No free return shipping.: Items can be returned within one year of purchase for a refund. Proof of purchase is required. Returns & Exchanges through UPS or US mail are $6.50 per package or free if you used an L.L. Bean credit card or used Bean Bucks. Items can be returned in store at no extra cost.: 90-day deadline for most return
