Chopper 7 was over the scene, and a number of squad cars could be seen about 3 p.m. near Route 83 and 22nd Street.The standoff stemmed from a police investigation into a burglary and retail theft suspect, Oak Brook police said. The suspected vehicle wanted in connection to the crimes was located at the Oakbrook Center mall by a license plate reader. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspect fled before being involved in a crash at the intersection of Route 83 and 22nd Street, police said.
The driver refused to exit the vehicle following the crash after multiple commands by responding officers, officials said. At one point, officers approached a vehicle with what appeared to be a shield, and appeared to take the driver into custody. That person was later put in an ambulance after police said they reported injuries from the crash.The vehicle the person had been inside had its back windshield shattered, which police said was "disabled" with a bean bag by officers to gain visibility inside the vehicle.The investigation of the burglary and retail theft continue, Oak Brook police said.
