As Afghan refugees settle in and learn about Cleveland, they can enjoy a slice of their culture near the city’s West Park neighborhood.

CLEVELAND, Ohio --

Assad said his shop makes pita bread and foods such as spinach pies and hummus in-house. The Afghan refugees love the tannour bread the shop sells, he said. The refugees call it Afghani bread, and Assad and his family call it Arabic bread. Assad, whose parents are from Jerusalem, was born in Dearborn, Michigan, and moved to Cleveland when he was seven years old.

As refugees become acclimated to Cleveland and its surrounding areas, Assad said work opportunities shouldn’t be hard to find considering several businesses are looking for workers. Eddir, who is from Jerusalem, said many Afghan refugees comprise the store’s customer base, and most don’t speak English or Arabic. Afghanistan’s official languages are Dari -- also known as Farsi -- and Pashto. Eddir said his store has recently procured some Afghani food that has Farsi written on the packaging, and it has sold well.

The transition to living in America is filled with challenges for refugees, whether it be through language or other cultural barriers. Kifaya Mohamed, who owns Kifaya’s Kitchen, personally understands those challenges. Mohamed is from Somalia, and she came to America in 2006 as a refugee from Yemen. She speaks Somali, Arabic and some English.
