Restaurants are jacking up the price of guacamole, as Trump's border threats send avocado prices soaring
Skimpier avocado portions, pricier guacamole and toast topped with ricotta cheese instead of avocado are some of the culinary shocks diners should brace for as prices for the trendy Mexican import skyrocket.
The Hass Avocado Board, an agriculture group that promotes consumption of the Mexican Hass Avocados in the U.S. did not immediately return a MarketWatch request for comment. The brand Avocados From Mexico, an importer of the Hass avocado, did not immediately return a request for comment. “The prices are generally between $28 and $36 for a case of 36 avocados and it’s currently jumped to $56 per case,” said Barry Dry, owner of Hole in The Wall Cafe and Bar in New York City. His restaurant goes through about 24 cases of avocados per week churning out dishes like a $12 avocado toast made with truffled feta and toasted pepitas. He sells around 150 orders each week day, and up to 250 on the weekend.
“It’s our main ingredient. I make a living off of avocados.” — Sammy Musovic, owner of New York City’s Selena Rose restaurant “We’re in a tough situation here. We really don’t know how to handle it,” Musovic said of paying around $75 per case of Hass avocados currently, adding that the restaurant sells at least 70 orders of the guacamole per day. “It’s our main ingredient. I make a living off of avocados.
“[Consumers can expect] prices to go up today or tomorrow 50% unless Trump backs down,” Phil Lempert, founder of Supermarketguru.com, a trade publication that tracks food news and trends, said. Michael Schrom, co-owner of Michigan-based TCB Food Processing, sells an asparagus guacamole made with asparagus puree, green chilies, diced tomatoes, jalapeno puree, vinegar and tomato paste for $6. For home use, asparagus can cost as low as $2 a pound, compared to one avocado which can cost between $1.27 and upwards of $2. At home, cooks can boil the asparagus and puree it with chilies and other spices.
